The Seed and Bean Story

office chocolate

Stephen Rudkin founded The Organic Seed & Bean Company in 2005. He had two simple dreams: to create ethical chocolate bars that made everyone go ‘wow’ when they tasted it. In fact, only if he gets a ‘wow’ when tasting his recipes does he then send the recipe to be produced.

Stephen believes that food should be made in an ethical manner by default. That's why he's sure that the ethical nature of Seed & Bean bars do not distract from their taste.

This might be why they are a regular fixture at Glastonbury Festival every year.

The Ethics of Seed and Bean

ethical chocolate

Every step in the process of producing a Seed & Bean bar is an attempt to be ethical and green. The organic and fair-trade Seed & Bean cocoa comes from Ecuador, The Dominican Republic and The Sao Tome Islands off West Africa. The suppliers are paid much more than average, and they grow the cocoa in organic and sustainable ways.

The Seed & Bean Company uses a small production facility in Northamptonshire, which really makes them look like artisan chocolatiers when comparing them to large industrial chocolate producers. It being locally made helps save food miles, as well as providing local employment.

The chocolate is then usually delivered in multi-drop vehicles, so as to save on fuel and carbon emissions. Even the foil wrappers are compostable (they’re made from trees)… It seems like everything’s been thought of.

But it doesn’t stop at the production. By just supporting Seed & Bean you help them provide nurseries to assist farmers to re-new their plantations.

All this focus on ethics has paid off for the company, as the Good Shopper Guide gave them 100% accreditation on their Ethical Chocolate ranking, the only brand who did so.

The Flavours

Stephen’s flavours are eccentric and daring. That’s why he loves that the production facility is in the UK: it means each batch can be tasted and tweaked so it is as perfect as possible. After all, the taste of chocolate changes over course of the year, depending on the harvest.

We put Stephen’s mini-bars in our pantries, so you can have a ‘kaleidoscopic moment of pleasure’, without any guilt. The flavours we provide are:
